Taura Smalls is DMOI’s Senior Legislative Advisor. In this role, she oversees all legislative matters affecting DMOI and its cluster agencies. Her responsibilities include strategy, monitoring, reporting, ethics, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), legislative drafting and rulemaking. She has been a public servant in the District government for more than 16 years. Previously, she was a Legislative Affairs Specialist in the Office of the Director at the DC Department of Housing and Community Development. There, she handled complex legislative issues and managed the development finance contract process for affordable housing and mixed-use projects, in excess of $1 million, for low and moderate-income persons. Prior to Taura’s District government service, she was an Investigator and Regional Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Labor and a Senior Tax Consultant for Deloitte & Touche, LLP.
Taura earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania, a J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. She is a native Washingtonian and a Ward 5 resident.
