(Washington, DC) Today, ahead of Saturday’s Open Streets in Ward 8, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced the dates of Open Streets in Wards 5 and 7. The Open Streets event for Ward 5 will take place on August 27, along 12th Street NE, and the Ward 7 Open Streets event will take place on July 30, along Benning Road NE.
Open Streets offers communities the opportunity to experience their streets in a whole new way. The events help residents and business reimagine public space to prioritize people over cars, provide easy access to recreation, and promote local economic development by helping support businesses participating in the event. This year, Open Streets includes both longer signature routes that span across multiple neighborhoods, as well as smaller routes that are intended to bring the benefits of Open Streets to a diverse set of neighborhoods across the District.
The next Open Streets event is Saturday, June 4, along 7th Street NW in Wards 2 and 6.
On Saturday, May 21, beginning at 9 am, Mayor Bowser and DDOT will host the “Open Streets in Your Neighborhood” event on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Ward 8, the first of a series of Open Streets events that will cover all eight wards.
